6 Key Elements That Impact Retention

In the fitness business, improving retention is the holy grail. It’s not just about getting new members through the doors — it’s about giving them a reason to stay, connect and belong.

At the 2025 Club Solutions Leadership Summit in Puerto Rico, I had the pleasure to present what makes a club truly sticky, and how lessons from industries far beyond fitness can reshape how we think about membership models, engagement and community-building.

After digging into customer experience research, behavioral science and real-world club data, we identified six essential ingredients that help clubs retain members long term:

  1. Community and Belonging: People don’t stay for equipment — they stay for relationships. Creating spaces and programs where members feel known, supported and included is the foundation of loyalty.
  2. Personalization and Member Engagement: Members expect a tailored experience. Progress tracking, customized challenges and personal recognition turn casual users into committed advocates.
  3. Results and Progress: Tracking progress fuels motivation. Whether it’s body composition metrics, class milestones or activity streaks, members need to feel tangible, visible improvement to stay invested.
  4. Habit Formation and Convenience: The easier it is for members to engage — through app scheduling, rewards for consistency or well-timed nudges — the more likely they are to form lasting fitness habits.
  5. Exceptional Member Service and Cleanliness: The basics aren’t basic. Friendly greetings, prompt issue resolution and sparkling clean environments have a disproportionate impact on how members feel about your brand.
  6. Beyond the Workout — Ancillary Services: Recovery services, nutrition guidance and social events extend your value proposition and deepen the member relationship beyond a workout transaction.

If you’re in the industry — which of these six elements are you leaning into most right now? Or which one do you see as your biggest opportunity for improvement? Drop it in the comments below.
